What One Point One Solutions Limited's (NSE:ONEPOINT) 29% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

The One Point One Solutions Limited (NSE:ONEPOINT) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 29%. The last month tops off a massive increase of 226% in the last year.

Since its price has surged higher, One Point One Solutions may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 62.2x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios under 33x and even P/E's lower than 19x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for One Point One Solutions as its earnings have been rising very briskly. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For One Point One Solutions?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as One Point One Solutions' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 127%. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 25% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

In light of this, it's alarming that One Point One Solutions' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From One Point One Solutions' P/E?

The strong share price surge has got One Point One Solutions' P/E rushing to great heights as well. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of One Point One Solutions revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with One Point One Solutions, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
