There's No Escaping TIL Limited's (NSE:TIL) Muted Earnings Despite A 29% Share Price Rise
TIL Limited (NSE:TIL) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 29% gain in the last month alone. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 21% is also fairly reasonable.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, TIL may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios greater than 28x and even P/E's higher than 54x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
For example, consider that TIL's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, TIL would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 30% decrease to the company's bottom line. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 23% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that TIL's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On TIL's P/E
Even after such a strong price move, TIL's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of TIL revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
