Recent 14% pullback isn't enough to hurt long-term TIL (NSE:TIL) shareholders, they're still up 939% over 3 years
It hasn't been the best quarter for TIL Limited (NSE:TIL) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 16% in that time. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been very strong. Indeed, the share price is up a very strong 187% in that time. So the recent fall in the share price should be viewed in that context. If the business can perform well for years to come, then the recent drop could be an opportunity.
While this past week has detracted from the company's three-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.
TIL isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
Over the last three years TIL has grown its revenue at 78% annually. That's much better than most loss-making companies. Along the way, the share price gained 42% per year, a solid pop by our standards. This suggests the market has recognized the progress the business has made, at least to a significant degree. That's not to say we think the share price is too high. In fact, it might be worth keeping an eye on this one.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between TIL's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for TIL shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 939%, over the last 3 years, is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 4.6% in the twelve months, TIL shareholders did even worse, losing 11%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 52%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
