PNC Infratech Limited (NSE:PNCINFRA) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 30% in the last quarter. But at least the stock is up over the last five years. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 61%, less than the market return of 162%.

In light of the stock dropping 8.4% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over half a decade, PNC Infratech managed to grow its earnings per share at 17% a year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 10% over the same period. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days. The reasonably low P/E ratio of 6.35 also suggests market apprehension.

A Different Perspective

PNC Infratech shareholders are down 11% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 21%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 10% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand PNC Infratech better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - PNC Infratech has 3 warning signs (and 2 which are a bit concerning) we think you should know about.
