Nila Infrastructures Limited (NSE:NILAINFRA) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 29% share price jump in the last month. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 34% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Nila Infrastructures is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.6x, considering almost half the companies in India's Construction industry have P/S ratios below 1.7x. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Nila Infrastructures' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Nila Infrastructures has been doing very well. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Nila Infrastructures?

Nila Infrastructures' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 54%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 20% drop in revenue in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 11% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Nila Infrastructures' P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Final Word

Nila Infrastructures' P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that Nila Infrastructures currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. With a revenue decline on investors' minds, the likelihood of a souring sentiment is quite high which could send the P/S back in line with what we'd expect. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.

It is also worth noting that we have found 2 warning signs for Nila Infrastructures (1 is a bit concerning!) that you need to take into consideration.
