JNK India Limited (NSE:JNKINDIA) Stocks Shoot Up 27% But Its P/E Still Looks Reasonable

JNK India Limited (NSE:JNKINDIA) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 27% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.

Since its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 25x, you may consider JNK India as a stock to avoid entirely with its 58.5x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

JNK India could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For JNK India?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like JNK India's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 48%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 20% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 170% over the next year. With the market only predicted to deliver 25%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

With this information, we can see why JNK India is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From JNK India's P/E?

The strong share price surge has got JNK India's P/E rushing to great heights as well. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that JNK India maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
