ITD Cementation India (NSE:ITDCEM) Is Reinvesting At Lower Rates Of Return
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. However, after investigating ITD Cementation India (NSE:ITDCEM), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for ITD Cementation India:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.16 = ₹2.1b ÷ (₹41b - ₹27b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).
So, ITD Cementation India has an ROCE of 16%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 11% generated by the Construction industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at ITD Cementation India doesn't inspire confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 16% from 23% five years ago. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
On a separate but related note, it's important to know that ITD Cementation India has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 67%, which we'd consider pretty high. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
What We Can Learn From ITD Cementation India's ROCE
