Stock Analysis
Even With A 32% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Beardsell Limited's (NSE:BEARDSELL) Performance Completely
Beardsell Limited (NSE:BEARDSELL) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 32% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 31% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 35x, you may still consider Beardsell as an attractive investment with its 22.4x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
For example, consider that Beardsell's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Beardsell would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 17%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 96% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 26% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Beardsell's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are more bearish than recent times would indicate and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Despite Beardsell's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Beardsell currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is in line with the wider market forecast. When we see average earnings with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions should normally provide more support to the share price.
