Lumax Industries' (NSE:LUMAXIND) Dividend Will Be Increased To ₹7.00
Lumax Industries Limited's (NSE:LUMAXIND) dividend will be increasing to ₹7.00 on 30th of September. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 0.4% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.

Lumax Industries' Earnings Easily Cover the Distributions
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Before making this announcement, Lumax Industries was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
According to analysts, EPS should be several times higher next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio will be 9.7%, which makes us pretty comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The first annual payment during the last 10 years was ₹3.00 in 2011, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ₹7.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 8.8% per annum over that time. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. Lumax Industries might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Over the past five years, it looks as though Lumax Industries' EPS has declined at around 19% a year. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this becomes a long term trend.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Lumax Industries will make a great income stock. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
