JBM Auto (NSE:JBMA) Has More To Do To Multiply In Value Going Forward
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. That's why when we briefly looked at JBM Auto's (NSE:JBMA) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for JBM Auto, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.17 = ₹3.2b ÷ (₹35b - ₹17b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
Therefore, JBM Auto has an ROCE of 17%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 14% generated by the Auto Components industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has employed 136% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 17%. Since 17% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
On a side note, JBM Auto's current liabilities are still rather high at 49% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
What We Can Learn From JBM Auto's ROCE
In the end, JBM Auto has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 1,248% return they've received over the last five years. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
