GRP Limited (NSE:GRPLTD) Stocks Shoot Up 38% But Its P/S Still Looks Reasonable
GRP Limited (NSE:GRPLTD) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 38% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days were the cherry on top of the stock's 314% gain in the last year, which is nothing short of spectacular.
Following the firm bounce in price, you could be forgiven for thinking GRP is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 4.3x, considering almost half the companies in India's Auto Components industry have P/S ratios below 1.5x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How GRP Has Been Performing
We'd have to say that with no tangible growth over the last year, GRP's revenue has been unimpressive. One possibility is that the P/S is high because investors think the benign revenue growth will improve to outperform the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, GRP would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Although pleasingly revenue has lifted 65% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So while the company has done a solid job in the past, it's somewhat concerning to see revenue growth decline as much as it has.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 11% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
In light of this, it's understandable that GRP's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Final Word
The strong share price surge has lead to GRP's P/S soaring as well. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
It's no surprise that GRP can support its high P/S given the strong revenue growth its experienced over the last three-year is superior to the current industry outlook. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident revenue aren't under threat. Barring any significant changes to the company's ability to make money, the share price should continue to be propped up.
