Telsys Ltd. (TLV:TLSY) Pays A ₪3.3139647 Dividend In Just Three Days

Telsys Ltd. (TLV:TLSY) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next 3 days. The ex-dividend date is two business days before a company's record date in most cases, which is the date on which the company determines which shareholders are entitled to receive a dividend. It is important to be aware of the ex-dividend date because any trade on the stock needs to have been settled on or before the record date. Meaning, you will need to purchase Telsys' shares before the 22nd of December to receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 6th of January.

The company's upcoming dividend is ₪3.3139647 a share, following on from the last 12 months, when the company distributed a total of ₪7.18 per share to shareholders. Based on the last year's worth of payments, Telsys stock has a trailing yield of around 3.4% on the current share price of ₪212.00. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.

Dividends are typically paid out of company income, so if a company pays out more than it earned, its dividend is usually at a higher risk of being cut. Telsys paid out more than half (52%) of its earnings last year, which is a regular payout ratio for most companies. Yet cash flows are even more important than profits for assessing a dividend, so we need to see if the company generated enough cash to pay its distribution. Over the last year, it paid out more than three-quarters (87%) of its free cash flow generated, which is fairly high and may be starting to limit reinvestment in the business.

It's positive to see that Telsys's dividend is covered by both profits and cash flow, since this is generally a sign that the dividend is sustainable, and a lower payout ratio usually suggests a greater margin of safety before the dividend gets cut.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Companies with consistently growing earnings per share generally make the best dividend stocks, as they usually find it easier to grow dividends per share. If business enters a downturn and the dividend is cut, the company could see its value fall precipitously. That's why it's comforting to see Telsys's earnings have been skyrocketing, up 27% per annum for the past five years.

Another key way to measure a company's dividend prospects is by measuring its historical rate of dividend growth. In the past seven years, Telsys has increased its dividend at approximately 25% a year on average. It's exciting to see that both earnings and dividends per share have grown rapidly over the past few years.

The Bottom Line

Is Telsys an attractive dividend stock, or better left on the shelf? Higher earnings per share generally lead to higher dividends from dividend-paying stocks over the long run. That's why we're glad to see Telsys's earnings per share growing, although as we saw, the company is paying out more than half of its earnings and cashflow - 52% and 87% respectively. All things considered, we are not particularly enthused about Telsys from a dividend perspective.
