Hamashbir 365's (TLV:MSBI) Returns On Capital Are Heading Higher
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So when we looked at Hamashbir 365 (TLV:MSBI) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Hamashbir 365, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.078 = ₪81m ÷ (₪1.5b - ₪426m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2022).
Therefore, Hamashbir 365 has an ROCE of 7.8%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 5.3% generated by the Multiline Retail industry, it's much better.

What Can We Tell From Hamashbir 365's ROCE Trend?
We're glad to see that ROCE is heading in the right direction, even if it is still low at the moment. The numbers show that in the last five years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 7.8%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 271% more capital is being employed now too. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
On a related note, the company's ratio of current liabilities to total assets has decreased to 29%, which basically reduces it's funding from the likes of short-term creditors or suppliers. Therefore we can rest assured that the growth in ROCE is a result of the business' fundamental improvements, rather than a cooking class featuring this company's books.
