So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. As with many other companies Alrov Properties and Lodgings Ltd. (TLV:ALRPR) makes use of debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?

When Is Debt A Problem?

Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. How Healthy Is Alrov Properties and Lodgings' Balance Sheet?

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Alrov Properties and Lodgings had liabilities of ₪1.22b due within 12 months and liabilities of ₪7.47b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had ₪987.5m in cash and ₪108.0m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by ₪7.60b.

The deficiency here weighs heavily on the ₪3.69b company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. At the end of the day, Alrov Properties and Lodgings would probably need a major re-capitalization if its creditors were to demand repayment.

Weak interest cover of 2.3 times and a disturbingly high net debt to EBITDA ratio of 11.4 hit our confidence in Alrov Properties and Lodgings like a one-two punch to the gut. This means we'd consider it to have a heavy debt load. Looking on the bright side, Alrov Properties and Lodgings boosted its EBIT by a silky 31% in the last year. Like the milk of human kindness that sort of growth increases resilience, making the company more capable of managing debt. Our View

But at least it's pretty decent at growing its EBIT; that's encouraging. Once we consider all the factors above, together, it seems to us that Alrov Properties and Lodgings's debt is making it a bit risky. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but we'd generally feel more comfortable with less leverage. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
