Lapidoth Capital Ltd's (TLV:LAPD) 27% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up
Despite an already strong run, Lapidoth Capital Ltd (TLV:LAPD) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 52%.
After such a large jump in price, Lapidoth Capital's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20.9x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in Israel, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 15x and even P/E's below 11x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.
Earnings have risen firmly for Lapidoth Capital recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Lapidoth Capital's Growth Trending?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Lapidoth Capital would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 21% gain to the company's bottom line. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 4.7% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 23% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term earnings results is a sobering picture.
In light of this, it's alarming that Lapidoth Capital's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
The Bottom Line On Lapidoth Capital's P/E
The large bounce in Lapidoth Capital's shares has lifted the company's P/E to a fairly high level. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Lapidoth Capital currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E since its recent earnings have been in decline over the medium-term. When we see earnings heading backwards and underperforming the market forecasts, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
