Some Investors May Be Worried About Equital's (TLV:EQTL) Returns On Capital
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Equital (TLV:EQTL) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Equital is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.073 = ₪1.5b ÷ (₪24b - ₪2.7b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
Thus, Equital has an ROCE of 7.3%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Oil and Gas industry average of 12%.

How Are Returns Trending?
In terms of Equital's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 12% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
What We Can Learn From Equital's ROCE
While returns have fallen for Equital in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. In light of this, the stock has only gained 12% over the last five years. So this stock may still be an appealing investment opportunity, if other fundamentals prove to be sound.
