Here's Why We Don't Think Issta Lines's (TLV:ISTA) Statutory Earnings Reflect Its Underlying Earnings Potential

Many investors consider it preferable to invest in profitable companies over unprofitable ones, because profitability suggests a business is sustainable. Having said that, sometimes statutory profit levels are not a good guide to ongoing profitability, because some short term one-off factor has impacted profit levels. Today we'll focus on whether this year's statutory profits are a good guide to understanding Issta Lines (TLV:ISTA).

While Issta Lines was able to generate revenue of ₪177.3m in the last twelve months, we think its profit result of ₪39.2m was more important. Below, you can see that both its revenue and its profit have fallen over the last three years.

Importantly, statutory profits are not always the best tool for understanding a company's true earnings power, so it's well worth examining profits in a little more detail. This article will focus on the impact unusual items have had on Issta Lines' statutory earnings. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit

To properly understand Issta Lines' profit results, we need to consider the ₪46m gain attributed to unusual items. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. Issta Lines had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to September 2020. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On Issta Lines' Profit Performance

As previously mentioned, Issta Lines' large boost from unusual items won't be there indefinitely, so its statutory earnings are probably a poor guide to its underlying profitability. For this reason, we think that Issta Lines' statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. Sadly, its EPS was down over the last twelve months. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved.
