Rapac Communication & Infrastructure (TLV:RPAC) Has Rewarded Shareholders With An Exceptional 457% Total Return On Their Investment
When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. One great example is Rapac Communication & Infrastructure Ltd. (TLV:RPAC) which saw its share price drive 276% higher over five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 11% gain in the last three months. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 17% in the last three months.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the last half decade, Rapac Communication & Infrastructure became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. We can see that the Rapac Communication & Infrastructure share price is up 165% in the last three years. In the same period, EPS is up 10% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 38% average annual increase in the share price over three years. So one can reasonably conclude the market is more enthusiastic about the stock than it was three years ago.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Rapac Communication & Infrastructure's TSR for the last 5 years was 457%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Rapac Communication & Infrastructure shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 57% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 41% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Rapac Communication & Infrastructure (at least 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
