Return Trends At China Resources Gas Group (HKG:1193) Aren't Appealing
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. That's why when we briefly looked at China Resources Gas Group's (HKG:1193) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on China Resources Gas Group is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.14 = HK$8.2b ÷ (HK$110b - HK$50b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).
Thus, China Resources Gas Group has an ROCE of 14%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Gas Utilities industry average of 8.4% it's much better.

What Can We Tell From China Resources Gas Group's ROCE Trend?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. The company has employed 68% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 14%. 14% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that China Resources Gas Group has consistently earned this amount. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
On a side note, China Resources Gas Group's current liabilities are still rather high at 45% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
What We Can Learn From China Resources Gas Group's ROCE
To sum it up, China Resources Gas Group has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. Therefore it's no surprise that shareholders have earned a respectable 46% return if they held over the last five years. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
