Is Now The Time To Put Qinhuangdao Port (HKG:3369) On Your Watchlist?
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Qinhuangdao Port (HKG:3369), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Qinhuangdao Port Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
Even modest earnings per share growth (EPS) can create meaningful value, when it is sustained reliably from year to year. So EPS growth can certainly encourage an investor to take note of a stock. It's good to see that Qinhuangdao Port's EPS have grown from CN¥0.17 to CN¥0.21 over twelve months. That's a 23% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While we note Qinhuangdao Port's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 6.0% to CN¥6.7b. That's a real positive.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Qinhuangdao Port's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.
Are Qinhuangdao Port Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that Qinhuangdao Port insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. To be specific, they have CN¥123m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Despite being just 0.7% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. For companies with market capitalizations between CN¥6.5b and CN¥21b, like Qinhuangdao Port, the median CEO pay is around CN¥4.1m.
The CEO of Qinhuangdao Port only received CN¥768k in total compensation for the year ending . That looks like modest pay to me, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
Should You Add Qinhuangdao Port To Your Watchlist?
