Pacific Basin Shipping (HKG:2343) Has A Pretty Healthy Balance Sheet

When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. Importantly, Pacific Basin Shipping Limited (HKG:2343) does carry debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. A Look At Pacific Basin Shipping's Liabilities

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Pacific Basin Shipping had liabilities of US$422.1m due within 12 months and liabilities of US$272.1m due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$215.0m in cash and US$139.1m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total US$340.1m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

This deficit isn't so bad because Pacific Basin Shipping is worth US$1.62b, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. But we definitely want to keep our eyes open to indications that its debt is bringing too much risk.

But the stark truth is that we are concerned by its EBIT growth rate. All these things considered, it appears that Pacific Basin Shipping can comfortably handle its current debt levels. Of course, while this leverage can enhance returns on equity, it does bring more risk, so it's worth keeping an eye on this one.
