Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. For example, the China Tower Corporation Limited (HKG:788) share price is down 30% in the last year. That falls noticeably short of the market return of around 19%. China Tower may have better days ahead, of course; we've only looked at a one year period. On the other hand the share price has bounced 9.8% over the last week. But this could be related to the strong market, with stocks up around 5.7% in the same time.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Even though the China Tower share price is down over the year, its EPS actually improved. It's quite possible that growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

It's fair to say that the share price does not seem to be reflecting the EPS growth. So it's easy to justify a look at some other metrics.

Given the yield is quite low, at 1.4%, we doubt the dividend can shed much light on the share price. China Tower's revenue is actually up 5.8% over the last year. Since we can't easily explain the share price movement based on these metrics, it might be worth considering how market sentiment has changed towards the stock.

A Different Perspective

Given that the market gained 19% in the last year, China Tower shareholders might be miffed that they lost 29% (even including dividends). While the aim is to do better than that, it's worth recalling that even great long-term investments sometimes underperform for a year or more. With the stock down 4.7% over the last three months, the market doesn't seem to believe that the company has solved all its problems. Given the relatively short history of this stock, we'd remain pretty wary until we see some strong business performance. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
