It is hard to get excited after looking at MTT Group Holdings' (HKG:2350) recent performance, when its stock has declined 30% over the past three months. However, the company's fundamentals look pretty decent, and long-term financials are usually aligned with future market price movements. In this article, we decided to focus on MTT Group Holdings' ROE.

ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.

How Is ROE Calculated?

ROE can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for MTT Group Holdings is:

6.7% = HK$14m ÷ HK$210m (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).

The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. Another way to think of that is that for every HK$1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn HK$0.07 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

A Side By Side comparison of MTT Group Holdings' Earnings Growth And 6.7% ROE

On the face of it, MTT Group Holdings' ROE is not much to talk about. However, given that the company's ROE is similar to the average industry ROE of 7.5%, we may spare it some thought. Having said that, MTT Group Holdings has shown a meagre net income growth of 4.8% over the past five years. Bear in mind, the company's ROE is not very high . So this could also be one of the reasons behind the company's low growth in earnings.

We then performed a comparison between MTT Group Holdings' net income growth with the industry, which revealed that the company's growth is similar to the average industry growth of 4.7% in the same 5-year period.
