Market Participants Recognise SenseTime Group Inc.'s (HKG:20) Revenues Pushing Shares 30% Higher
SenseTime Group Inc. (HKG:20) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 30% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 2.1% isn't as impressive.
Following the firm bounce in price, when almost half of the companies in Hong Kong's Software industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.2x, you may consider SenseTime Group as a stock not worth researching with its 12.5x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does SenseTime Group's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
SenseTime Group hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

SenseTime Group's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 3.0%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 12% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 36% as estimated by the ten analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 25%, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we can see why SenseTime Group is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From SenseTime Group's P/S?
Shares in SenseTime Group have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that SenseTime Group maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Software industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat.
