OneForce Holdings (HKG:1933) Will Want To Turn Around Its Return Trends
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. In light of that, when we looked at OneForce Holdings (HKG:1933) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for OneForce Holdings:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.12 = CN¥30m ÷ (CN¥439m - CN¥191m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).
So, OneForce Holdings has an ROCE of 12%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 5.8% generated by the Software industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For OneForce Holdings Tell Us?
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at OneForce Holdings doesn't inspire confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 21% over the last five years. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a side note, OneForce Holdings' current liabilities have increased over the last five years to 43% of total assets, effectively distorting the ROCE to some degree. Without this increase, it's likely that ROCE would be even lower than 12%. What this means is that in reality, a rather large portion of the business is being funded by the likes of the company's suppliers or short-term creditors, which can bring some risks of its own.
What We Can Learn From OneForce Holdings' ROCE
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that OneForce Holdings is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. But since the stock has dived 77% in the last five years, there could be other drivers that are influencing the business' outlook. Regardless, reinvestment can pay off in the long run, so we think astute investors may want to look further into this stock.
