Shareholders Should Be Pleased With Pop Mart International Group Limited's (HKG:9992) Price
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 39x Pop Mart International Group Limited (HKG:9992) may be sending very bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in Hong Kong have P/E ratios under 9x and even P/E's lower than 5x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Recent times haven't been advantageous for Pop Mart International Group as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will turn things around completely and accelerate past most others in the market. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Pop Mart International Group would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 24%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 12% overall rise in EPS. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 38% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 16% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Pop Mart International Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Pop Mart International Group's P/E
While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Pop Mart International Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E.
