Do EEKA Fashion Holdings's (HKG:3709) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like EEKA Fashion Holdings (HKG:3709). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Quickly Is EEKA Fashion Holdings Increasing Earnings Per Share?
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. EEKA Fashion Holdings managed to grow EPS by 17% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). EEKA Fashion Holdings shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 8.8% to 11%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are EEKA Fashion Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So we're pleased to report that EEKA Fashion Holdings insiders own a meaningful share of the business. Indeed, with a collective holding of 69%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. At the current share price, that insider holding is worth a whopping CN¥5.1b. That means they have plenty of their own capital riding on the performance of the business!
It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. For companies with market capitalizations between CN¥2.6b and CN¥10b, like EEKA Fashion Holdings, the median CEO pay is around CN¥2.7m.
EEKA Fashion Holdings offered total compensation worth CN¥1.8m to its CEO in the year to . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Is EEKA Fashion Holdings Worth Keeping An Eye On?
As I already mentioned, EEKA Fashion Holdings is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Earnings growth might be the main game for EEKA Fashion Holdings, but the fun does not stop there. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, I'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. It's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
