Returns On Capital At Sino Gas Holdings Group (HKG:1759) Paint A Concerning Picture
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. In light of that, when we looked at Sino Gas Holdings Group (HKG:1759) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Sino Gas Holdings Group:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.043 = CN¥18m ÷ (CN¥1.0b - CN¥615m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).
Thus, Sino Gas Holdings Group has an ROCE of 4.3%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Specialty Retail industry average of 13%.

How Are Returns Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Sino Gas Holdings Group, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 38% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a separate but related note, it's important to know that Sino Gas Holdings Group has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 60%, which we'd consider pretty high. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
The Bottom Line
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Sino Gas Holdings Group is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. And there could be an opportunity here if other metrics look good too, because the stock has declined 69% in the last three years. As a result, we'd recommend researching this stock further to uncover what other fundamentals of the business can show us.
