Is Yincheng Life Service's (HKG:1922) 166% Share Price Increase Well Justified?

Yincheng Life Service CO., Ltd. (HKG:1922) shareholders might understandably be very concerned that the share price has dropped 41% in the last quarter. Despite this, the stock is a strong performer over the last year, no doubt about that. Indeed, the share price is up an impressive 166% in that time. So some might not be surprised to see the price retrace some. More important, going forward, is how the business itself is going.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Yincheng Life Service was able to grow EPS by 65% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 166% increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is now more optimistic about the stock.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Yincheng Life Service, it has a TSR of 171% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Yincheng Life Service shareholders have gained 171% over the last year, including dividends. We regret to report that the share price is down 41% over ninety days. Shorter term share price moves often don't signify much about the business itself. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Yincheng Life Service that you should be aware of before investing here.
