Yuexiu Property's (HKG:123) earnings trajectory could turn positive as the stock increases 7.0% this past week

For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But if you try your hand at stock picking, you risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term Yuexiu Property Company Limited (HKG:123) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 52% in three years, versus a market return of about 41%. On the other hand the share price has bounced 7.0% over the last week.

On a more encouraging note the company has added HK$1.2b to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the three-year loss for shareholders.

One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the three years that the share price fell, Yuexiu Property's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 39% each year. In comparison the 22% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. So, despite the prior disappointment, shareholders must have some confidence the situation will improve, longer term.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Yuexiu Property's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Yuexiu Property shareholders, and that cash payout explains why its total shareholder loss of 40%, over the last 3 years, isn't as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 36% in the last year, Yuexiu Property shareholders lost 8.5%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period.
