Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Road King Infrastructure Limited's (HKG:1098) 28% Share Price Plunge
Road King Infrastructure Limited (HKG:1098) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 28% share price drop in the last month. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 32% in that time.
After such a large drop in price, Road King Infrastructure may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Real Estate industry in Hong Kong have P/S ratios greater than 0.6x and even P/S higher than 3x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Road King Infrastructure Performed Recently?
For instance, Road King Infrastructure's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Road King Infrastructure's earnings, revenue and cash flow.Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Road King Infrastructure?
In order to justify its P/S ratio, Road King Infrastructure would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 58%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 78% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 6.8% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this in mind, we understand why Road King Infrastructure's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What We Can Learn From Road King Infrastructure's P/S?
Road King Infrastructure's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
It's no surprise that Road King Infrastructure maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
