The three-year decline in earnings for Creative China Holdings HKG:8368) isn't encouraging, but shareholders are still up 263% over that period

Creative China Holdings Limited (HKG:8368) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 12% in the last week. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been very strong. In three years the stock price has launched 263% higher: a great result. So the recent fall in the share price should be viewed in that context. The fundamental business performance will ultimately dictate whether the top is in, or if this is a stellar buying opportunity.

In light of the stock dropping 12% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive three-year return.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over the last three years, Creative China Holdings failed to grow earnings per share, which fell 19% (annualized).

So we doubt that the market is looking to EPS for its main judge of the company's value. Therefore, we think it's worth considering other metrics as well.

It may well be that Creative China Holdings revenue growth rate of 30% over three years has convinced shareholders to believe in a brighter future. If the company is being managed for the long term good, today's shareholders might be right to hold on.

A Different Perspective

Creative China Holdings shareholders are down 10% for the year, but the market itself is up 36%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 17% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 4 warning signs for Creative China Holdings you should be aware of, and 2 of them are significant.
