Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But you can significantly boost your returns by picking above-average stocks. To wit, the Mobvista Inc. (HKG:1860) share price is 17% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 1.9% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Note that businesses generally develop over the long term, so the returns over the last year might not reflect a long term trend.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year Mobvista grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 26%. It's fair to say that the share price gain of 17% did not keep pace with the EPS growth. So it seems like the market has cooled on Mobvista, despite the growth. Interesting.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Mobvista shareholders have gained 17% over the last year. The more recent returns haven't been as impressive as the longer term returns, coming in at just 1.0%. Having said that, we doubt shareholders would be concerned. It seems the market is simply waiting on more information, because if the business delivers so will the share price (eventually). Investors who like to make money usually check up on insider purchases, such as the price paid, and total amount bought.
