The Mobvista Inc. (HKG:1860) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 47%. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 14% in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Mobvista's P/S ratio of 0.4x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Media industry in Hong Kong is also close to 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Mobvista's Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Mobvista has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this strong revenue performance might be about to tail off. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Mobvista's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 26%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 113% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the only analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 16% over the next year. With the industry only predicted to deliver 5.7%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this information, we find it interesting that Mobvista is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

What Does Mobvista's P/S Mean For Investors?

Mobvista's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Mobvista currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the wider industry. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
