The Returns On Capital At CMOC Group (HKG:3993) Don't Inspire Confidence
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Having said that, from a first glance at CMOC Group (HKG:3993) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for CMOC Group:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.058 = CN¥7.3b ÷ (CN¥185b - CN¥59b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
So, CMOC Group has an ROCE of 5.8%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Metals and Mining industry average of 8.4%.

So How Is CMOC Group's ROCE Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at CMOC Group, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 9.8% over the last five years. However it looks like CMOC Group might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
While on the subject, we noticed that the ratio of current liabilities to total assets has risen to 32%, which has impacted the ROCE. Without this increase, it's likely that ROCE would be even lower than 5.8%. While the ratio isn't currently too high, it's worth keeping an eye on this because if it gets particularly high, the business could then face some new elements of risk.
The Bottom Line On CMOC Group's ROCE
To conclude, we've found that CMOC Group is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. Since the stock has gained an impressive 55% over the last five years, investors must think there's better things to come. However, unless these underlying trends turn more positive, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high.
