If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Zijin Mining Group (HKG:2899) Before It's Too Late
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Zijin Mining Group (HKG:2899). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is Zijin Mining Group Increasing Earnings Per Share?
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Impressively, Zijin Mining Group has grown EPS by 26% per year, compound, in the last three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Zijin Mining Group shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 6.1% to 8.5%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Of course the knack is to find stocks that have their best days in the future, not in the past. You could base your opinion on past performance, of course, but you may also want to check this interactive graph of professional analyst EPS forecasts for Zijin Mining Group.
Are Zijin Mining Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.
One gleaming positive for Zijin Mining Group, in the last year, is that a certain insider has buying shares with ample enthusiasm. In one fell swoop, Executive Chairman of the Board Jinghe Chen, spent HK$16m, at a price of HK$5.48 per share. It doesn't get much better than that, in terms of large investments from insiders.
The good news, alongside the insider buying, for Zijin Mining Group bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at CN¥1.2b. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!
Should You Add Zijin Mining Group To Your Watchlist?
For growth investors like me, Zijin Mining Group's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. Better still, insiders own a large chunk of the company and one has even been buying more shares. So it's fair to say I think this stock may well deserve a spot on your watchlist.
