Would Shareholders Who Purchased BBMG's (HKG:2009) Stock Three Years Be Happy With The Share price Today?
The truth is that if you invest for long enough, you're going to end up with some losing stocks. Long term BBMG Corporation (HKG:2009) shareholders know that all too well, since the share price is down considerably over three years. Sadly for them, the share price is down 59% in that time. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 30% lower in that time. It's down 1.8% in the last seven days.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the three years that the share price fell, BBMG's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 4.0% each year. The share price decline of 26% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past. The less favorable sentiment is reflected in its current P/E ratio of 5.45.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, BBMG's TSR for the last 3 years was -53%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Investors in BBMG had a tough year, with a total loss of 25% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 26%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 5% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand BBMG better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for BBMG (1 is potentially serious!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
