Here's Why We're Not At All Concerned With Republic Healthcare's (HKG:8357) Cash Burn Situation
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Republic Healthcare (HKG:8357) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

How Long Is Republic Healthcare's Cash Runway?
You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. As at June 2020, Republic Healthcare had cash of S$14m and no debt. Importantly, its cash burn was S$119k over the trailing twelve months. So it had a very long cash runway of many years from June 2020. Even though this is but one measure of the company's cash burn, the thought of such a long cash runway warms our bellies in a comforting way. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
Is Republic Healthcare's Revenue Growing?
We're hesitant to extrapolate on the recent trend to assess its cash burn, because Republic Healthcare actually had positive free cash flow last year, so operating revenue growth is probably our best bet to measure, right now. Although it's hardly brilliant growth, it's good to see the company grew revenue by 5.6% in the last year. In reality, this article only makes a short study of the company's growth data. This graph of historic earnings and revenue shows how Republic Healthcare is building its business over time.
How Easily Can Republic Healthcare Raise Cash?
Notwithstanding Republic Healthcare's revenue growth, it is still important to consider how it could raise more money, if it needs to. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
Since it has a market capitalisation of S$29m, Republic Healthcare's S$119k in cash burn equates to about 0.4% of its market value. So it could almost certainly just borrow a little to fund another year's growth, or else easily raise the cash by issuing a few shares.
Is Republic Healthcare's Cash Burn A Worry?
It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Republic Healthcare is burning through its cash. For example, we think its cash runway suggests that the company is on a good path. On this analysis its revenue growth was its weakest feature, but we are not concerned about it. Looking at all the measures in this article, together, we're not worried about its rate of cash burn, which seems to be under control. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 3 warning signs for Republic Healthcare (of which 1 doesn't sit too well with us!) you should know about.
