The board of UMP Healthcare Holdings Limited (HKG:722) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 10th of January, with investors receiving HK$0.02 per share. However, the dividend yield of 7.8% is still a decent boost to shareholder returns.

UMP Healthcare Holdings' Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, UMP Healthcare Holdings' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 24.3% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 56% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
UMP Healthcare Holdings' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
It's comforting to see that UMP Healthcare Holdings has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. Due to this, we are a little bit cautious about the dividend consistency over a full economic cycle. Since 2016, the annual payment back then was HK$0.02, compared to the most recent full-year payment of HK$0.033. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 6.5% a year over that time. We like to see dividends have grown at a reasonable rate, but with at least one substantial cut in the payments, we're not certain this dividend stock would be ideal for someone intending to live on the income.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. UMP Healthcare Holdings has impressed us by growing EPS at 24% per year over the past five years. UMP Healthcare Holdings is clearly able to grow rapidly while still returning cash to shareholders, positioning it to become a strong dividend payer in the future.
We Really Like UMP Healthcare Holdings' Dividend
It is generally not great to see the dividend being cut, but we don't think this should happen much if at all in the future given that UMP Healthcare Holdings has the makings of a solid income stock moving forward. The cut will allow the company to continue paying out the dividend without putting the balance sheet under pressure, which means that it could remain sustainable for longer. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
