The board of Vitasoy International Holdings Limited (HKG:345) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 14th of September to HK$0.29. This takes the annual payment to 1.2% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Vitasoy International Holdings' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Based on the last dividend, Vitasoy International Holdings is earning enough to cover the payment, but the it makes up 136% of cash flows. The company might be more focused on returning cash to shareholders, but paying out this much of its cash flow could expose the dividend to being cut in the future.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 16.5% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 59%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2011, the dividend has gone from HK$0.27 to HK$0.33. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.1% a year over that time. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.
Vitasoy International Holdings May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. However, Vitasoy International Holdings' EPS was effectively flat over the past five years, which could stop the company from paying more every year. Growth of 0.2% per annum is not particularly high, which might explain why the company is paying out a higher proportion of earnings. This isn't bad in itself, but unless earnings growth pick up we wouldn't expect dividends to grow either.
Our Thoughts On Vitasoy International Holdings' Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
