The board of Jiumaojiu International Holdings Limited (HKG:9922) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of CN¥0.15 on the 5th of July, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the annual payment to 3.0% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Jiumaojiu International Holdings' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Jiumaojiu International Holdings' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 102.2%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 24% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Jiumaojiu International Holdings' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

Even in its short history, we have seen the dividend cut. Since 2021, the annual payment back then was CN¥0.0161, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CN¥0.138. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 105% over that duration. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Jiumaojiu International Holdings has impressed us by growing EPS at 35% per year over the past five years. The company doesn't have any problems growing, despite returning a lot of capital to shareholders, which is a very nice combination for a dividend stock to have.

Jiumaojiu International Holdings Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
