Returns On Capital Are A Standout For JS Global Lifestyle (HKG:1691)
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So when we looked at the ROCE trend of JS Global Lifestyle (HKG:1691) we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for JS Global Lifestyle:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.21 = US$616m ÷ (US$4.5b - US$1.6b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).
So, JS Global Lifestyle has an ROCE of 21%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Consumer Durables industry average of 12%.

How Are Returns Trending?
The trends we've noticed at JS Global Lifestyle are quite reassuring. The numbers show that in the last four years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 21%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 77% more capital is being employed now too. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
On a side note, we noticed that the improvement in ROCE appears to be partly fueled by an increase in current liabilities. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 35% of its operations, which isn't ideal. It's worth keeping an eye on this because as the percentage of current liabilities to total assets increases, some aspects of risk also increase.
In Conclusion...
To sum it up, JS Global Lifestyle has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. Given the stock has declined 29% in the last year, this could be a good investment if the valuation and other metrics are also appealing. With that in mind, we believe the promising trends warrant this stock for further investigation.
Like most companies, JS Global Lifestyle does come with some risks, and we've found 1 warning sign that you should be aware of.
