C-Link Squared Limited (HKG:1463) Stock Rockets 41% As Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
Despite an already strong run, C-Link Squared Limited (HKG:1463) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 41% in the last thirty days. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 18% is also fairly reasonable.
Since its price has surged higher, when almost half of the companies in Hong Kong's Professional Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.5x, you may consider C-Link Squared as a stock not worth researching with its 31.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How C-Link Squared Has Been Performing
For instance, C-Link Squared's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like C-Link Squared's to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 11%. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 22% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 18% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that C-Link Squared's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On C-Link Squared's P/S
C-Link Squared's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of C-Link Squared revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't detracting from the P/S as much as we though, given they look worse than current industry expectations. When we observe slower-than-industry revenue growth alongside a high P/S ratio, we assume there to be a significant risk of the share price decreasing, which would result in a lower P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these the share price as being reasonable.
Having said that, be aware C-Link Squared is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 2 of those are a bit concerning.
Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
