Shanghai Industrial Holdings' (HKG:363) Shareholders Will Receive A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Shanghai Industrial Holdings Limited (HKG:363) has announced it will be reducing its dividend by 13% from last year's payment of HK$0.48 on the 11th of October, with shareholders receiving HK$0.42. The yield is still above the industry average at 9.4%.

Shanghai Industrial Holdings' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. However, prior to this announcement, Shanghai Industrial Holdings' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 40.5%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 27%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2012, the annual payment back then was HK$1.08, compared to the most recent full-year payment of HK$1.02. Dividend payments have shrunk at a rate of less than 1% per annum over this time frame. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Unfortunately, Shanghai Industrial Holdings' earnings per share has been essentially flat over the past five years, which means the dividend may not be increased each year.
In Summary
In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Shanghai Industrial Holdings is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
