Revenues Not Telling The Story For Geotech Holdings Ltd. (HKG:1707) After Shares Rise 45%
Geotech Holdings Ltd. (HKG:1707) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 45% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 68% share price drop in the last twelve months.
After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Geotech Holdings is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1x, considering almost half the companies in Hong Kong's Construction industry have P/S ratios below 0.3x. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Geotech Holdings Performed Recently?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Geotech Holdings over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Geotech Holdings would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 52%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 59% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 11% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we find it concerning that Geotech Holdings is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
The Final Word
The large bounce in Geotech Holdings' shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Geotech Holdings currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
