Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that Lamda Development S.A. (ATH:LAMDA) does use debt in its business. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt A Problem?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is Lamda Development's Net Debt?
As you can see below, at the end of March 2023, Lamda Development had €1.16b of debt, up from €711.8m a year ago. Click the image for more detail. On the flip side, it has €496.4m in cash leading to net debt of about €660.1m.
How Healthy Is Lamda Development's Balance Sheet?
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Lamda Development had liabilities of €1.05b due within 12 months and liabilities of €2.01b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had €496.4m in cash and €97.3m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by €2.47b.
The deficiency here weighs heavily on the €1.19b company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. After all, Lamda Development would likely require a major re-capitalisation if it had to pay its creditors today. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Lamda Development's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
In the last year Lamda Development wasn't profitable at an EBIT level, but managed to grow its revenue by 83%, to €165m. Shareholders probably have their fingers crossed that it can grow its way to profits.
Caveat Emptor
While we can certainly appreciate Lamda Development's revenue growth, its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is not ideal. To be specific the EBIT loss came in at €29m. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above make us nervous about the company. It would need to improve its operations quickly for us to be interested in it. It's fair to say the loss of €45m didn't encourage us either; we'd like to see a profit. And until that time we think this is a risky stock. When we look at a riskier company, we like to check how their profits (or losses) are trending over time. Today, we're providing readers this interactive graph showing how Lamda Development's profit, revenue, and operating cashflow have changed over the last few years.
