I Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Elve (ATH:ELBE) Passed With Ease

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Elve (ATH:ELBE). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Elve's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Elve has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, Elve's EPS shot from €0.27 to €0.61, over the last year. Year on year growth of 127% is certainly a sight to behold.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Elve shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 2.2% to 7.7%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Since Elve is no giant, with a market capitalization of €26m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Elve Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Elve insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. Indeed, with a collective holding of 75%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. In terms of absolute value, insiders have €20m invested in the business, using the current share price. That's nothing to sneeze at!

Does Elve Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Elve's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Elve for a spot on your watchlist. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Elve has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.

Although Elve certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
