Braemar (LON:BMS) Has Announced That Its Dividend Will Be Reduced To £0.025
Braemar Plc (LON:BMS) has announced that on 8th of September, it will be paying a dividend of£0.025, which a reduction from last year's comparable dividend. However, the dividend yield of 3.2% still remains in a typical range for the industry.
Braemar's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. However, Braemar's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 48.3% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 21% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from £0.26 total annually to £0.07. This works out to a decline of approximately 73% over that time. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Dividends have been going in the wrong direction, so we definitely want to see a different trend in the earnings per share. Braemar hasn't seen much change in its earnings per share over the last five years.
In Summary
Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Braemar is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
