Should You Be Adding Jet2 (LON:JET2) To Your Watchlist Today?

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Jet2 (LON:JET2), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

How Fast Is Jet2 Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Jet2's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Jet2 boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from UK£2.01 to UK£2.31, in the last year. There's little doubt shareholders would be happy with that 15% gain.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. EBIT margins for Jet2 remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 18% to UK£6.9b. That's a real positive.

Are Jet2 Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's said that there's no smoke without fire. For investors, insider buying is often the smoke that indicates which stocks could set the market alight. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

It's good to see Jet2 insiders walking the walk, by spending UK£164k on shares in just twelve months. This, combined with the lack of sales from insiders, should be a great signal for shareholders in what's to come. We also note that it was the Independent Non-Executive Chairman, Robin Terrell, who made the biggest single acquisition, paying UK£119k for shares at about UK£13.88 each.

The good news, alongside the insider buying, for Jet2 bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at UK£421m. That equates to 13% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. So there is opportunity here to invest in a company whose management have tangible incentives to deliver.

Does Jet2 Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

As previously touched on, Jet2 is a growing business, which is encouraging. On top of that, we've seen insiders buying shares even though they already own plenty. That should do plenty in prompting budding investors to undertake a bit more research - or even adding the company to their watchlists. Still, you should learn about the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Jet2.

Keen growth investors love to see insider activity. Thankfully, Jet2 isn't the only one. You can see a a curated list of British companies which have exhibited consistent growth accompanied by high insider ownership.
