Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Shearwater Group plc's (LON:SWG) Revenues Despite 44% Price Jump
Shearwater Group plc (LON:SWG) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 44% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 4.3% over the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Shearwater Group may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United Kingdom have P/S ratios greater than 2.3x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Shearwater Group's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Shearwater Group's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Shearwater Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 25% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 63% during the coming year according to the one analyst following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 8.5%, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Shearwater Group's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Shearwater Group's P/S
Despite Shearwater Group's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Shearwater Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major risk factors that are placing downward pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Shearwater Group, and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
